Chinese Embassy provides new chairs for Congress

PALIKIR, Pohnpei. July 31, 2008 – The 15th Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia has received a donation of “swivel chairs” for the Congress Chambers by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.

On July 29 2008, Speaker Isaac V. Figir officially accepted the donation from Ambassador Liu Fei of the Chinese Embassy during a small turn-over ceremony held in the Congress chambers.

The executive chairs are an impressive combination of black leather padded seat back and armrests with dark cherry wood base. The chairs would seat the Members, Chief Clerk, Legal Counsel, Journal Clerk and the Sergeant-at-Arms with four extra in storage.

Secretary Lorin S. Robert of the Department of Foreign Affairs, on behalf of the government, expressed appreciation to Ambassador Liu for the generous gift.  A gesture which according to the Secretary, further enriches the relationship between the FSM and the PROC as it would assist in the capacity of the work of Congress.

The chairs would be put to use during the next session of Congress.  It would also be the first time replacement for the well-utilized Congress chairs that had furnished the Congress Chambers since it opened its doors in the early 90’s.
